Description

Earlier 19th century. 2-storey former shop, converted to public house, 1975. Coursed rubble, with droved ashlar dressings; applied ashlar shop front at ground, with base course and cornice.

S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: gable with 3-bay shop front at ground, comprising broad 2-leaf glazed timber door at centre, flanked by windows with ashlar aprons; windows to left and right at 1st floor.

E ELEVATION: vertically boarded timber door, with rectangular fanlight and ashlar steps to street, to right at ground; blind window to left at ground infilled with painted sign. Corbelled chimney breast to left of centre at 1st floor; piended dormer breaking eaves at right. Single storey and basement addition to right, comprising 2-leaf vertically boarded timber doors centred at basement, with stone lintel, window centred at ground.

Plate glass shop windows at ground to S elevation, 9-pane timber sash and case windows at 1st floor to S elevation. Grey slate roof. Cast-iron rainwater goods. Ashlar gablehead and wallhead stacks, coped with circular cans.

INTERIOR: not seen, 1997.

Statement of Interest

Part of the Second New Town A Group, Kay's Bar was originally a mews building for India Street, and was converted to a public house from Kay's Wine Shop, in 1975. It is of significant interest as one of the few surviving buildings from the original Jamaica Street, which was nearly all demolished in 1960.
