Description

Late 18th century; interior recast by David Bryce, 1850; facade remodelled and heightened by W Hamilton Beattie, 1873. 4-storey and attic, 3-bay. Polished cream sandstone ashlar. Modern shop at ground built out over basement area. Broad painted projecting 5-light window to 2 left bays at 1st and 2nd floors, with Corinthian pilasters and entablature, bracketed cornice (continuing across facade), blocking course and acroteria. Remaining windows with architraves, and consoled cornice at 1st floor. Eaves cornice and blocking course. Tripartite central ashlar wallhead dormer with pilaster mullions and scrolls, entablature and segmental pediment; flanked by segmental-headed timber dormers.

Timber sash and case plate glass windows. Mansard roof with grey slates; ashlar coped skews; stacks removed.

INTERIOR: Bryce?s Jacobean ceiling survives at ground, enclosed within later ceiling; cornices to upper floors.

Statement of Interest

Formerly the City Club. Incorporates part of the original fabric of Edinburgh?s New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain.
