Description

William Hogg, 1887. 4-storey, 4-bay Scottish 17th century style tenement, forming part of terrace. Squared and snecked sandstone with polished dressings. Base course; string course above 1st floor; corbel table at 3rd floor; crowstepped gables with paterae insets to outer bays; pedimented dormerheads with stone finials to 3rd floor windows in inner bays; chamfered reveals.

W ENTRANCE: elevation: roll-moulded doorway at centre; deep-set panelled door; plate glass fanlight. Single windows at ground floor in flanking bays; bipartite windows at 1st and 2nd floors; single windows at 3rd floor. Full-height canted windows corbelled to square at gableheads in bays to outer left and right. Plate glass sash and case windows; replacement 3-light pivot windows at 1st floor to left of centre. Grey slate roof; coped mutual stacks; moulded cans; beak skewputts. INTERIORS: not seen 1991.

Low boundary wall to street.

Statement of Interest

Designed for the builder, John Pyper, along with the neighbouring Nos 57 and 59 Marchmont Road (see separate listings). Differs from the Dean of Guild plans.
