Description

Circa 1880. 4-storey Scottish 17th century style corner tenement with shops at ground floor. Squared and snecked sandstone with polished ashlar dressings. Base course; cornice above shopfronts; raised window surrounds; chamfered reveals.

E MARCHMONT ROAD elevation: black marble-faced bank-front to outer left, with contrasting fluted corner column; 2 little-altered shopfronts flanking main door entrance; pestel and mortar chemists trade sign to left of door; altered shopfront to outer right. 6-bay above shopfronts. Circular section 3-stage turret clasping angle to outer left; 3 windows to each stage; conical fishscale roof with decorative cast-iron finial. Singlewindows in 2nd, 4th and 5th bays; dormerheads pedimented to 2nd bay, crowstepped to 4th bay, and linked to wallhead stack at 5th bay. Full-height canted window corbelled to square at crowstepped gable in 3rd bay; slit window set in gablehead; stone thistle finial. Full-height canted window to outer right; facetted pyramidal roof; decorative cast-iron finial.S THIRLESTANE LANE elevation: 2-bay with 2 windows at ground and crowstepped gable above to outer right; doorway blocked to form window in 2nd bay; single windows above. Single windows in remaining bay. 4-pane sash and case windows; replacements at 1st floor uin 4th 5th 6th bays. Grey slate roof; corniced wallhead and gablehead stacks; moulded octagonal cans, beakskewputts.
