Description

Mid 19th century. Detached villa with some Italianate

details; 2-storeys and attics. Polished ashlar with painted

dressings and base-course.

3 irregular bays to E elevation (to Sydenham Road): centre

bay with ramped-pillar porch, rising to heavy bracketted

balcony with pierced ashlar parapet. Pilastered arched

doorpiece, double-leaf panelled door, glazed fanlight. Above

door; single-light window with recessed shouldered moulded

architrave. To right; gabled advanced bay. Single-storey

canted bay window to ground with pilaster mullions; modillion

cornice and pierced ashlar parapet. Above, bipartite arched

windows with banded archivolt. To left at ground;

single-light architraved window with paired consoles, cornice

and parapet. To 1st floor, arched hood-moulded window in

advanced rectangular panel rising into gablet. Sash windows,

plate glass glazing. Deeply overhanging timber bracketted

eaves. Axial stacks, unusual incised decorative cans; slate

roofs.

To left, service wing, now converted to dwelling; 2-storey

gabled block attached to main house by single storey and

attic recessed bay with wide, shouldered arch doorpiece now

with modern door.

Roof of main house; long low arcaded top light to billiard

room.

N elevation stugged ashlar with simplified details.

Tall wallhead stack.

W elevation (to garden) further simplified conservatory at

rear.

Interior with elaborate plasterwork to cornice and ceilings

of main rooms. Panelled dado to hall; cast-iron stair

balusters with carved timber newel post.

Low coped ashlar wall to front garden with pair of tall

square ashlar gatepiers with checked-back arrises and arched hood-mouldings supporting coping stone.
