Description

James Thomson (Baird and Thomson), 1902. Free classical
commercial building on corner site; 4 storeys, double and
single attic with modern shops at ground floor. 9 x 12
unequal bays. Ground floor cornice with cast-iron fretwork
balustrade to 1st floor windows. All windows sash and case.
1st floor glazed pilastrade with carved friezes to columns.
1st floor projecting entablature supporting 2 storeys of
tripartite columned or pilastered window with carved heads;
boldly projecting eaves modillion cornice supporting pierced
parapet in 5 sections between double-storey attic windows
latter with pilastered tripartite windows with balustrade and
individual bell-cast roofs and finials breaking through attic
cornice. Single storey dormers; tripartite with outer
pilasters and inner Solomonic columns to Sauchiehall Street,
composite columns to Cambridge Street; shaped pediments.
Truncated pyramidal angle roofs. Pend in northmost bay to
Cambridge Street with cast-iron gates.
