Description

W F MacGibbon as Sherbrooke UF Church opened 1900; hall adjoining to W, and also with gable to Nithsdale Road, opened in 1894. 13th century French gothic. Stone-cleaned yellow ashlar, snecked and bull-faced,

polished dressings; main roof slated.

CHURCH is cruiciform-plan, unaisled, with low twin-gabled transepts, big gabled front to Nithsdale Road with 5-light window set in arched panel with sculptured tympanum, flanking buttresses carried upwards as octagonal pinnacles with red-tiled roofs; porch to left, moulded doorway with inset figures (Knox and Calvin); HALL has traceried gable window and flanking buttresses.

Low boundary wall to street.

Statement of Interest

Ecclesiastical building in use as such. Severely damaged by fire, 28 July 1994. Reconstruction in progress (September 1996).
