Later 19th century. 3-storey, rambling Scots Baronial hotel on corner site. Stugged coursers, painted at 1st floor, ashlar dressings, slate roof. Modern shopfronts at ground floor, string course to 1st and 2nd floor, deep wallhead corbel table broken through by crowstepped gables and pedimented dormerheads. Single and bipartite windows, moulded jambs, plate glass sash and case frames, some with modern out-of-keeping replacements. Corniced wallhead; ball-finialled dormerheads with alternate crescent moon and star symbols in pediments; corniced stacks. QUARRY STREET ELEVATION: doorpiece to centre left comprising moulded round-headed doorcase, half-columns with foliate capitals, stepped moulding with decorative panel over arch flanked by heraldic lions in angles; tripartite window to right, round-headed lights with capitalled half-columned mullions and stepped hoodmould; modern shopfronts to left and right; 2 single and 5 bipartite windows to 1st floor, 5 dormerheaded windows to 2nd floor, 2nd bay from left and bay at far right corbelled from 1st floor with window and corwstepped gable to 2nd floor.
DUKE STREET ELEVATION: 2 bays to left partially collapsed, part of facade retained within brick pentice-roofed consolidation; 2 bays to centre, 2 bipartites at 1st floor, 2 dormerheaded windows to 2nd; angled bay to right, window to 1st floor, 2nd floor corbelled from 1st with window, heraldic panel inscribed 'BLESS GOD FOR ALL GIFTS' and crowstepped gable. INTERIOR: not seen.
The building occupies a conspicuous corner site at the New Cross.
