Description

A N Paterson, 1915. 2-storey, asymmetrical L-plan villa. Cream bull-faced, square and snecked sandstone rubble, polished ashlar dressings and quoins; mock half-timbered details. Tall base course, moulded cill course at 1st floor to S elevation, single, bipartite and tripartite windows with chamfered reveals, stone mullions, wooden mullions to W canted window and casement windows, bracketted eaves.

W (ENTRANCE/STREET) ELEVATION: 3 asymmetrical bays; lower bay to outer left with round-arched doorpiece, stop-chamfered shouldered surround, modern panelled door, cartouche dated 1915, stepped and corbelled string course over to apron of bipartite window set in advanced panel above. Taller gabled 2 bays to right with apex stack, small squarte-headed window set in round-arched panel to centre at ground, window above, canted window to left with piended slate roof, window above.

S (GARDEN) ELEVATION: 3 bays; single transomed window to ground at centre, tripartite mullioned window above at 1st floor and to ground and 1st floor to right. Full-height canted window to outer left with 1-2-1 arrangement of mullioned and transomed windows at ground and 1st floor, segmental-arched door and flanking windows to attic behind tall parapet forming balcony.

E ELEVATION: 10 asymmetrical bays; 2 bays to left with moulded string course, window with transom to outer left at ground, window at 1st floor to right. 5 advanced bays to right, window at 1st floor with attic in re-entrant angle set in segmental-arched ashlar panel in corbelled panel with curved angle corbelled to square, rising to crowstepped gable with corniced stack at apex. Advanced bays with moulded lintel course at 1st floor, chamfered angle to left, with window at ground and 1st floor to each bay. 3 advanced bays to right including taller gabled bay to outer right with door to left, apex stack.

N ELEVATION: advanced 3-bay service wing to outer left, window to centre and left, tripartite window to right, bipartite dormer window breaking eaves with half-timber detail to apex, bargeboard.

W return: taller lop-sided gable tocentre with window at 1st floor and corniced stack to apex; 3 windows at ground, bracketted half-timbered tripartite window above window to centre. Stepped 4-light stair window at 1st floor on return to N, door at ground to left, small window to right.

Advanced block to right corbelled to half-timber at 1st floor, tripartit e window at ground, bipartite window to left, tripartite window to right above to N face. Chamfered recess on return to left, corbelled to square above. Taller crowstepped gabled bay to outer right with circular taller crowstepped gabled bay to outer right with circular window at ground, window above, corniced stack to apex.

Mostly sash and case windows with plate glass to lower sashses and 6-pane to upper, casement windows to half-timbered elevations, patterned leaded glass to stair window. Blue/green slates, ashlar coped skews and bracketted block skewputts. Original rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: flatted. Timber gallery at 1st floor to stairhall.

GATEPIERS AND BOUNDARY WALLS: stepped bull-faced snecked rubble walls, semi-circular coped. Corniced ashlar piers, with ball finials.
