Late 18th century. 3-storey and attic rectangular-plan tenement (fronting Bank Street) connected to much altered 19th century building (fronting High Street). 18th century block: coursed rubble; droved stone cills; droved rybats; gable end to street Bank Street. 19th century block: 2-storey, 3 bay shop and tenement, rendered, painted margins, with modern shop front.
E (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: central door; widened ground floor window to right. 2 1st floor windows above ground floor openings; 2 2nd floor windows above; single attic floor window to right of gablehead.
S ELEVATION: door to far left (new opening); small square window to far right (new opening). 2 1st floor windows to outer bays. 2 2nd floor windows to outer bays. Single rooflight to far left.
W (HIGH STREET) ELEVATION: later 20th century plate-glass shop front with glass and metal door to right; modern timber panel door with large fanlight to left. 3 evenly spaced 1st floor windows. (Adjoins 2 High Street to left and 6, 8 High Street to right.)
Predominantly plate glass in timber sash and case windows; 20th century plate glass windows to ground floor and attic windows. Pitched roof; grey slates; straight ashlar skews; chimneystack missing.
INTERIOR: no original features remaining.
This is a traditional tenement building set within the medieval core of burgh on an island site (bordered by High Street to the W, Bank Street to the E and Townhall Street to the N) that was developed in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The original character of the earlier building is still preserved with most original openings in tact and original sandstone rubble construction in evidence. The property at 4, 4A High Street now incorporates the upper floors of 1 Bank Street and thus also forms part of this listing.
