Description

Ross & Macbeth, 1895. French Renaissance, coursed masonry. 3 storeys and attic. To Queensgate, 10-bay front with pilastraded shop fronts at ground floor; at 1st floor, 2nd and 7th windows are recessed bows with carved friezes and scroll-pedimented tablets flanked by urns, other windows with hoodmoulds. Corner to Academy Street, canted at ground

floor with corbelled bowed oriel at 1st and 2nd floors gableted at attic. Academy Street front 4 bays, pilastraded shop fronts at ground floor, centre windows with sculpted frieze at first floor, centre scrolled pediment flanked by urns. Slated mansard roof.

Queensgate was laid out in 1884 to a plan by Alexander Ross.
