Description

18th century with later alterations and additions. 2-storey, 3-bay near-symmetrical rectangular-plan, crowstepped-gabled house sited at end of terrace, adjoining 2-storey, 2-bay house to right (E), (not listed); single storey, flat-roofed addition to outer left (W). Harled; rubble to rear. Deep-set openings.

S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: window at each floor in bay to centre and to left. Horizontally arranged bipartite window to addition set back to outer left. Modern part-glazed timber door in widened doorway at ground in bay to right; window at 1st floor above.

W (SIDE) ELEVATION: large bipartite to addition at ground offset to left; window to main block at 1st floor above. Window at ground to main block in bay to right; gablehead stack above.

N (REAR) ELEVATION: blank.

2-pane timber sash and case windows; timber framed windows to additons; small rooflights to S pitch. Corrugated roof; stone ridge; crowstepped W gable; harled, corniced gablehead stack to W; similar common stack to E; predominantly uPVC rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen, 1998.

Statement of Interest

A traditional Kirkwall town house with small, widely spaced and deep-set windows, broad chimney stacks and crowstepped gables. Retaining its crowstepped gable and deep-set windows, this house remains relatively intact in form.
