Description

18th century with alter alterations. 2-storey, 3-bay (4-bay at ground) asymmetrical crowstepped gabled house with flat-roofed addition to rear. Harled. 1st floor windows set close under eaves.

N (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: deep-set, part-glazed modern door at ground in bay to centre; window at 1st floor above. Window at each floor in bay to outer left. Window at ground in bay to right of centre. Window at each floor in bay to outer right.

W (SIDE) ELEVATION: blank with gablehead stack above; blank flat-roofed addition to outer right.

4-pane fixed and timber sash and case windows at ground; 2-pane timber framed windows with top-hung upper lights. Grey slate roof; stone ridge; harled, corniced gablehead stacks; cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen, 1998.

Statement of Interest

This western part of Kirkwall was developed in the 18th century, extending as far as High Street and some way along Glaitness Road. Development seems to have been confined to the south side of the street, houses on the other side being built much later. Although altered at ground, Number 14 retains its crowstepped gables, broad corniced stacks, and deep-set openings.
