Description

Architect probably William Elliot. Built approximately
1811-1813. 2-storey town house, with classical detail and
tower central on 3-bay main elevation to Market Square.
Stugged ashlar with polished dressings and rusticated quoins.
TOWER: rises in 3 diminishing stages above main eaves level;
door in cavetto reveals, cast-iron lamp bracket over is later
19th century; round-arched impost and keyblocked openings
above; 2nd stage pilastered at angles; 4th stage with clock,
belfry above, upswept bell-cast stone roof with weathervane.
Body of town house is rectangular-plan, with square-headed
openings (sash windows with 4-pane glazing pattern), band
course between floors, cornice and blocking course, piended
slate roof. 2-bay flanks; library adjoins to SE (see separate
entry).
Interior altered.

Statement of Interest

SRO GD224/657/13/1/34 includes reference to "Mr Elliot's

plan" - presumably William Elliot since he was employed by

the Duke of Buccleuch about that time (eg. at Drumlanrig in

1813). Foundation stone laid 24.6.1811. Memorials to William

Julius Mickle and to C M Grieve (Hugh MacDiarmid), poets. B
