Description

HOUSE 1901/2, Campbell Douglas of Glasgow, 2 storeys and attics mansion in extensive grounds. Red pressed brick with red sandstone dressings and half timbered gable ends with scalloped and pierced barge boards, many gabled broad eaved slate roof with red ridge tiles brick chimney stacks with attached diagonal shafts. Entrance front has 5 gables projecting from main roof. Cantilevered gabled canopy of timber over

approximately central round arched doorway with banded jambs and fanlight. 4 gables and 2 gablets project from main roof on stepped garden front; large single-storey semi-circular 3 light bay at west end, with timber balustrade above; 3rd projecting gable has chamfered ground floor, corbelled out on 3 sides to square 1st floor. Large double ridged conservatory projects from west front, with 3 light corner oriel turret with conical roof, above. Moulded windows of varying size, all with small paned upper and 4 pane lower sashes, 5 transomed upper hall windows, attic windows in gables, small pane casement, miniscule gabled dormers have single pane windows.

Internal features include galleried and panelled 2 storey entrance hall.

GATEPIERS set in hemicycle recess in high sandstone rubble garden wall, square ashlar piers with cornice and steep sided pyramid tops.

LODGE single storey, ridge slate roof with scalloped and pierced barge boards and half timbered gable ends, red ridge tiles, red pressed brick with red sandstone dressings.

Central flat roofed, semi octagonal, 3 light bay window with brick cornice and stone blocking course flanked by 1 window left, 1 door right. Windows with small paned upper and 4 paned lower sashes.

STABLES 2 storeys, U-plan with triple gabled roof over court. Slate ridge roof with red ridge tiles, pierced barge boards and half timbered gable ends. Near symmetrical front with twin gables; left with window ground and 1st floors, right with bipartite ground floor window under hayloft door. Recessed portion has 2 dormer headed windows under gablets. Court has larger gable over central pierced curvilinear timber gates and smaller gables over flanking windows. Return elevation to west has forestair to 1st floor porch over entrance to coachman's flat.
