Description

Early 19th century with later addition. 2-storey 3-bay end-of-terrace house on ground falling to S (single storey to street); later service extension to E. Whinstone with cream sandstone dressings (some cement). Long and short quoins; regular fenestration.

N (BIGGIESKNOWE) ELEVATION: single storey, 3 bays; pair of Velux rooflights. Blank wall of extension slightly set back to left.

E ELEVATION: projecting 2-storey gabled extension to right with garage at ground and window above. To left, windows to both floors of main house.

S (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: symmetrical 2-storey 3-bay. At centre ground, steps to artisan-classical Ionic doorpiece with pair of fluted columns and entablature supporting lion; panelled door with diamond-paned letterbox fanlight. Extension set back to right with window at 1st floor.

Timber sash and case 12-pane windows. Grey slates; ashlar coped mutual skew; coped whinstone apex stack.

INTERIOR: not seen 1994.

BOUNDARY WALL: low whin boundary wall to S, with semi-circular coping and modern railings.

Statement of Interest

The finest surviving house in Biggiesknowe, which was once the centre of the hand weaving industry in Peebles. The house was once known as Crichton Cottage, and seems to have had a door and porch onto the street.
