Description

Earlier 19th century. Large walled garden, approx 100m square; tall walls measuring 17? in height. Coursed rubble wall, some cement harl repair; ashlar slab coping. Entrance at centre of W wall, ashlar gabletted bellcote with pointed arched opening above. Broad segmental arched opening at centre of S wall, arch infilled with boarded timber.

INTERIOR: range of glasshouses against N wall, all now in ruinous condition. Lean-to range to outer left, remains of decorative work of brackets. Large conservatory style glasshouse at centre, canted block advanced at centre, sandstone ashlar base. Large, narrow curved greenhouse to outer right.

Statement of Interest

The garden was the former kitchen garden. It was formerly divided into 4 with a sundial at the centre; fruit was grown in the southern section. The garden is no longer in use. The expanse of glasshouses is impressive but they are in a poor condition.
