Description

Earlier 19th century. U-plan steading comprising gabled single storey and attic stable, bothy and hayloft (to W), and former threshing mill (to E) linked by single storey byre and barn; single storey monopitch pigsty centred to S. Harl-pointed rubble walls.

S ELEVATION: near-symmetrical, 3 evenly-spaced vertically-boarded timber doors to barn and byre; door to left flanked by rectangular windows. Entrance door to mill with window to right in re-entrant angle with E range. Vertically-boarded timber door with altered opening to left in re-entrant angle with W range. Blank S gables to E and W ranges; monopitch timber-framed addition with rubble E wall to gable of E range.

E ELEVATION: 6-pane hoppered timber window to outer right; 6-spoke, single-ring cast-iron waterwheel with square axle adjacent to left with small square openings centred above at eaves.

N ELEVATION: near-symmetrical, square vertically-boarded timber sheaf and hay hatches in gableheads to outer left and right respectively, with additional hay hatch at ground to left in right gable. 4-bay link between gables with square muck-hatches (some now enlarged) in each bay.

Purple-grey slate roofs with cast-iron rooflights and timber ventilators at ridges. Rubble skew copes, single-flue gablehead stack to S gable of W range, coped with circular can.

INTERIOR: vertically-boarded timber partition dividing N and S ends of threshing mill. S end containing store at ground with grain loft above. Timber ladder accessing 1st floor and N end containing timber threshing machinery, cast-iron gearing inside E wall, with adjacent timber hopper to girnel at ground. Central link containing cow byre in E side; W side containing byre with stone flag floor and triangulated timber stalls; horizontally-boarded partition with 'stable' door to barn. W range containing hay loft at 1st floor to N, gig shed and stable to S with bothy at 1st floor accessed by open timber stair.

PIGSTY: random rubble walls with monopitch roof sloping to S; vertically-boarded timber doors centring N elevation to drystone-walled runs.

LADE: concrete mill lade from S partially surviving along E elevation.

BOUNDARY AND STACKYARD WALLS: drystone walls enclosing former farmyard to S, and stackyard to N.

Statement of Interest

A fascinating survivor. Not only is the interior and machinery of the threshing mill intact, but also the byre, barn, stable and bothy with many original features. The farmhouse was originally sited immediately south of the steading, but was demolished in 1929. The W south-facing gable was previously fronted by a timber potato store.

Statutory address revised in 2017. Previously listed as 'Baltasound, Oredale steading, including threshing mill, pigsty, lade, stackyard, and boundary walls'.
