Description

Early to earlier 19th century with later alterations. Single storey, 3-bay rectangular-plan symmetrical cottage, gable end to sea. Re-pointed roughly coursed rubble. Eaves course. Ashlar lintels to S; cement lintels to E; timber mullions.

S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: stone step to modern boarded door in bay to centre. Window in each bay flanking.

E (SIDE) ELEVATION: slightly recessed tripartite window (formerly door) offset to left of centre. Window to right; small attic window; gablehead stack above.

Replacement 12-pane timber sash and case windows; fixed 8-pane lights to tripartite. Stone tiles; stone ridge; cement skews; rubble corniced gablehead stacks to E and W; cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen, 1997.

QUAY: Caithness flagstones to quay with stone flight to sea to NE.

Statement of Interest

Originally a dwelling and perhaps one of the older ones in Stromness; subsequently a fisherman's store and a coal store, at which time most of the east gable wall was removed to accomodate a large door. Returned to a dwelling, 1996/7.
