18th century with later alterations. 2-storey, 3-bay rectangular-plan symmetrical cottage built on ground rising to W, adjoining similar cottage to E with common crowstepped gable; lean-to addition to right (W). Harled. Eaves course.
S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: deep-set modern, part-glazed door at ground in bay to centre. Window at each floor in each bay flanking.
W (SIDE) ELEVATION: lean-to projection spanning bays at ground; window, set to left at 1st floor; gablehead stack above.
12-pane timber sash and case windows; central rooflight to S pitch. Graded traditional Caithness stone roof; stone ridge; harled, coped stacks (common stack to E); uPVC rainwater goods.
INTERIOR: not seen, 1998.
B-Group with Building to rear of 8 Clay Loan, 8 and 10 Clay Loan. Clay Loan breaks the old main street and climbs steeply to the west to Gallow Ha, the former place of public execution in Kirkwall. Originally the Common or South Loan, it takes its present name from its use as source of mortar for Kirkwall houses. Number 12 is of particular interest as it retrains its small-pane timber glazing and its traditional Caithness stone-tiled roof.
