Description

Manufactured circa 1910. Bandstand on polygonal concrete base with decorative iron railings. Swept canopy with urn finials supported by simple iron columns. Ornate lantern with ribbon swags, foliate decoration, domed roof and decorative finial.

Statement of Interest

The bandstand was originally sited at the 1911 Glasgow International Exhibition in Kelvingrove Park. In 1924 it was purchased by Forth District Council from Glasgow District Council. The Park was donated to the people of Stonehouse by Alexander Hamilton, a native of the village, who made his fortune as head of the Victoria Carpet Company in Kidderminster, later manufacturing khaki for the troops in the 1st World War. The ground was bought from the neighbouring Holm Farm, and the Park, with its bandstand, was opened by Alexander Hamilton on 30th May 1925. The bandstand is important due to the technical bravura of its manufacture, the relative rarity of its survival, and its historical associations both with the important Scottish National Exhibition and with the local community of Stonehouse.
