Description

17th century stone sundial. Polyhedral dial stone on moulded baluster and square pedestal with carved heads.

Statement of Interest

The sundial when drawn by MacGibbon and Ross was in the grounds of Warriston House, which had already been demolished. At some point it is thought to have been moved to the terrace at Inverleith House, purchased by the Fettes Trustees in 1863. The sundial was moved to its present position as a central feature in the sunken garden of the

Headmaster?s garden

in 1893. The 1877 OS map shows the distinctive pattern of the sunken garden.

The grounds of Fettes College were laid out in 1863 by Archibald Campbell Swinton, an Edinburgh lawyer and Governor of the College.
