Description

William and Lewis A Wallace, early 19th century. 4-storey and basement 9-bay classical tenement in terraced site. Polished sandstone ashlar; V-pointed rustication to principal floor; broached ashlar to basement. Band course to principal floor; cill course to 1st and 2nd floors; cornice to 2nd floor; blocking course. Ashlar steps and entrance platts oversailing basement.

W (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: flush-panelled common stair door centred at principal floor, flanked by windows; flush-panelled doors in bays 3rd from left and right, with windows in bays to outer left and right. Regular fenestration to floors above. Good cast-iron anthemion and palmette window guards to 1st floor of No 27, cast-iron window guards to 4th floor of No 23 and No 27. Flagged basement area; coped rubble walls, vertically boarded timber doors to cellars. N elevation obscured by adjoining terrace (1-25 Royal Crescent, see separate listing).

Predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slate M-roof. Cast-iron rainwater goods. Rendered and broached ashlar ridge stacks, rubble gablehead stack; coped with circular cans.

INTERIORS: not seen 1997, but some evidence of working panelled shutters.

RAILINGS AND LAMPS: ashlar copes, surmounted by cast-iron railings with fleur-de-lis balusters and quasi-Maltese cross finials. Cast-iron railing-mounted lamps with glass globes.

Statement of Interest

Part of the Second New Town A Group, a significant surviving part of one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain.
