History

C18 stone bridge, replaced old Penmachno bridge swept away by great storm of 20 June 1779

Exterior

Approx 60 metres long; carriageway approx 4m wide. Five arches; 2 main arches (cutwater between on upstream side) span river; 3 lower flood arches to W. Arches elliptical with thin voussoirs below shallow hoods. Slate parapet approx 1m high with vertically-set cappings. Inscription on stone on S parapet:

'Pont isel drafel ar dro - pont lydan
I wladwyr drafaelio
Pont a fydd mewn pant tra fo
Pont ar ochor Pentrefachno
I. Hughes a Harry Parry
O Garnarvon 1785.'

Inscription on rear of same stone with initials 'JWMO IWE' (?), and date
'AD 1903'. Stone also bears faint inscribed heads of two men with pipes said locally to be builders of bridge.
