History

A late C16 house originally one-and-a-half storeys converted early C17 by raising the walls. In the C18 the outside cross passage and byre were replaced by a kitchen, while a new byre was added at the higher end of the house. The house was repaired and modernised 1960s by Louis Hurley.

Exterior

Two-storey house of rubble stone painted white. The original house is 2-window and has a stone tile roof and stone stack to R. To R of original house is C18 kitchen (separated by a butt joint) with a slate roof, a stone stack to R and 2 windows. To the L is a former byre with corrugated iron roof. The main house has windows to the front enlarged in the 1960s. Sawn-off beams suggest a former pentice. The kitchen wing has similar inserted windows and a 1960s porch. In the R gable end are 2 enlarged windows. The rear of the main house has a small stair light to L and a C19 casement to R under a timber lintel. The kitchen has a small pantry opening and a 2-light casement to L.

The byre has 2 doorways to the front under timber lintels, and with 2 blocked ventilation slits to the loft. The rear has a former doorway under a timber lintel later blocked to form a window, while to the loft are tall narrow breathers.

Interior

The doorway from the original cross passage to the hall has a wooden stop-chamfer surround and a boarded door with strap hinges. The hall has cross beams with run-out stops, a fireplace with a large timber lintel and a stone stair to its L. A post-and-panel partition is part repaired and has 2 doorways (with triangular head to R) with boarded doors and strap hinges. In the upper storey are 2 pairs of upper crucks with lapped collars, above which principals are added on posts. In the kitchen is a projecting fireplace with a timber lintel, and cross beams with stepped stops.

Reasons for Listing

A good example of a sub-medieval regional building type retaining good internal detail and forming a strong visual group with the barn.
