History

The present Gyrn Castle was built for John Douglas, a Holywell cotton manufacturer, in the period 1817-24, and was an enlargement of an earlier house. After Douglas died in 1839 the house was purchased by Sir Edward Bates, a Liverpool merchant and ship owner, who was responsible for most of the outbuildings, including the walled garden. The walled garden was built in the third quarter of the C19 and is first shown on the 1871 Ordnance Survey. It 1890 it was known as the Melon Yard.

Exterior

A long narrow garden on a S-facing sloping site, the N wall being higher than the S wall, and the W side narrower than the E. Of embattled rubble stone walls, except the curving SW end which has no battlements and is probably earlier. The SW corner has a polygonal castellated turret, L of which is the segmental-headed doorway. This has a replaced door with vertical ribs. The internal N wall is buttressed. On its outer NE side is an added projection. A former garden terrace was built against the outer S wall.
