Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary

A Grade I Listed Building in Stonham Aspal, Suffolk

Effigy of a knight

Uploader's Comments

Broken effigy of a knight in the arched recess in the north wall of the sanctuary. Damaged by the Puritans in 1643, the head, arms and legs were later found concealed in the rood-loft staircase. The knight was a member of the Aspal family and may have been Sir John de Aspale. The effigy dates from 1348 or earlier.
