Christchurch Priory and Parish Church

A Grade I Listed Building in Christchurch, Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole

Christchurch Priory: Salisbury Chantry (Lady Margaret Pole, 1529, ex. 1541) from the north choir aisle side

Mixture of medieval & renaissance imagery.
Margaret Pole intended to be buried in this chantry chapel. It didn't go to plan 'as her son Cardinal Pole published on the continent an attack on Henry VIII. The tyrant turned in a fury on every member of Pole's family within reach, the Countess of Salisbury among them. She refused to place her head on the block and it was hacked from her shoulders as she stood. So extreme was Henry's rage that he refused to allow her remains to be laid in the beautiful chantry at Christchurch. She was buried within the precincts of the Tower of London'
