The Cross and Hand

A Grade II Listed Building in Batcombe, Dorset

CROSS AND HAND, BATCOMBE, DORSET

Uploader's Comments

Pevsner: 'a stone shaft with a rough capital. Possibly pre-Conquest'. In Hardy's 'Tess' (and locally) the 'Cross-in-Hand'. Fairly recently awarded a small protective enclosure by DCC, with a tiny stile. High up on the Batcombe ridge with spectacular 180ยบ views - on a clear day, as far as Dunkery Beacon, Exmoor. There was 70p in small change on the top when I took this photo, proving that some superstitions never die.
