Description

LEEDS

SE2932 SWEET STREET, Holbeck
714-1/42/855 (North side (off))
Former Marshall Mills Schoolroom

GV II

School, now industrial unit. Probably 1822. For John
Marshall's flax mill. Brown brick, rendered on 3 sides, hipped
slate roof. 2 storeys, 3 first-floor windows to south side, 5
(1 blocked) to north, rubbed brick flat arches. Probably
original blocked doorway north side, right.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Important as a survival of a mill school established for the
employees of Marshall Mills (qv), over 500 of whom were under
13 by 1840, out of a total workforce of 2,600. The building
was accommodated in the plan of the Temple Mill, Marshall
Street (qv), the west wall of which was realigned to follow
the line of the east end and rear yard of the school.
