I'm intrigued by the steps on the right that don't appear to lead anywhere. Can they have perhaps been a mounting block, built to enable gentlemen to mount their horse?

According to the owners, Thwaites the brewers, the building apparently dates back to 1753. This seems a more likely date than early 1800s.
