This photograph shows the East side of the bridges three main arches. The stone 'fenders' can be clearly seen. It is assumed they had a practical purpose - taking the strain if a boat struck the bridge. The area near the bridge is called locally 'ackydoc' not sure of the spelling but it may be a dialect version of 'Aqueduct' as an elevated section of the Chard and Ilminster canal ran parallel to the railway embankment - now largely removed after the 1960's rail closure.
