HISTORIC NOTE:
The name Claverdon means 'Clover Hill' and much of the land in this district, according to the Victoria History of Warwickshire, formed the Manor, which estate passed centuries ago to the Earls of Warwick. It seems that the first year on record for the occupancy of Claverdon Hall is 1485. It was given as a warrant to Edward Verney, esq., who was known as 'His Lordship of Claverdon', during the reign of Richard III. In 1535 Roger Walford leased the property from Henry VIII for 21 years and was again known as 'His Lordship of Claverdon'. It seems that in 1547 the Lordship of Claverdon was then granted to John Dudley, Earl of Warwick, and in 1568 the Manor of Claverdon was sold to Sir John Spencer, whose family retained these lands until 1716 when they passed to the Archer family of Tanworth-in-Arden.
We cannot be certain, but there seems no reason why the site of the original 'Hall' may not be the same as the present Claverdon Hall, the major part of which is reputed to date back to the fifteenth or possibly even the fourteenth century.
Interestingly, there was another manor before 1485, owed by a Saxon, but after the Norman Conquest in the late 15th Century, the Normans decided to build a new Manor/Hall, rather than use the one that had been lived in by a Saxon!
INTRODUCTION:
Claverdon Hall is a Grade II listed exceptionally appealing and most distinctive part half-timbered country home offering superb period accommodation, which has been the subject of extension and careful refurbishment over the years to provide a truly outstanding family residence. Of special interest is the fine oak panelling to the reception hall, dining room and bedroom 3 and the deep oak framed leaded light windows, which provide a character, yet light ambience and afford views over the garden and countryside beyond. The large panelled oak door in the Hall opens into an understairs store - reputed to be a former priest's hole during the Reformation period and from which, many years ago, it is said there was an underground passage leading, in all probability to the old 'stone tower' in Manor Lane.
With four first class reception rooms, breakfast room, kitchen with Aga, utility, six bedrooms and three bathrooms (which have recently been refurbished), Claverdon Hall offers accommodation, which extends to some 5,380 sq.ft. In addition there are the magnificent outbuildings and stable block which lie to the north of the property and offer four car garage, coach house, implement stores, 6 stables and excellent games room, converted from a detached timbered barn. The formal parkland style gardens fully complement this period country home and extend to approximately 4.5 acres comprising lawns, shrubberies, rose garden, orchard, paddock and recently resurfaced all weather tennis court. Furthermore, we understand that additional land may be available to purchase, if required.
