These houses were extended and altered in the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1889 they were converted to residential use for Edinburgh University by Patrick Geddes. The council took over in 1947 and altered them again. Laterly they have been used as a learning centre then became vacant and are on the buildings at risk register. They have recently been leased by the Scottish Historic Buildings Trust who plan to create a Patrick Geddes Centre for learning and Conservation.
