In the late 19th century a local businessman, William Drummond, commissioned the sculptor Handyside Ritchie to create several statues of Protestant notables for the town cemetery
This is the statue of Ebeneezer Erskine, one of the leaders of the Secession Church which broke away from the Church of Scotland in the 1730s. The building in the background is the former burgh Grammar School.
