Anne Ragdale 1768. Black and white marble plaque. D.O.M. Near this Place lie interrd in a Vault the Remains of Mrs Anne Ragdale, Wife of the Revd John Ragdale MA Rector of Appleby in this County and of Normanton on Soar in the County of Nottingham Daughter of Atkin Dawson and Sister to Edward dawson Esq. late of this Parish. She was descended from an ancient and respectable family Her Person was graceful, her Education genttel, polite and Liberal: Yet was she free of the Levities and Follies The Vices and Extravagancies of the Age; Was an Affectionate Wife, a tender Mistress, a prudent Oeconomist, A sincere and constant Friend; Of very human and compassionate Disposition bountiful to the Needy And distressed, and after the pattern of the divine Benignity Kind even to the unthankful and the evil . In Short, for Piety, and Virtue, for singular and the most distinguishing Meekness and Mildness, Amiableness, and sweetness of Temper, For Benevolence and Charity, she was a Pattern to her Sex. These good Qualities rendered Her greatly beloved By all who had the Happiness to know her, And her Death an unspeakable Loss to all her Friends. May her example excite and animate others to imitate her Virtue In the sure Hope of the same glorious and immortal Reward She died( with decent and becoming Calmness Tranquility and composure of Mind And with exemplary Submission to the will of Heaven) October 16th 1768 In the 67th Year of her Age. In memory of a truly excellent and intirely beloved Consort, Her disconsolate Husband caused this Monument to be erected-. A wide winged angels head appears to have been prised from below the monument. (Photo Jun 2015).
