This Edward Watson was secretary to three successive Bishops of Lincoln and he married Emme the niece of Bishop Smith. Her effigy is placed by his side and on the slab the figures of their 15 children. Edward resided in Lyddington where he died in 1530 leaving in his Will a bequest to found a Chantry in this Church. His eldest son was placed in a monastery; the second his heir, secured on a lease from King Henry VIII the royal hunting residence at Rockingham Castle which eventually passed altogether to the Watson family.

The marginal inscription, now lost read 'Of your charite pray for the Soule of Master Edwarde Watson, Esquire, Justice of the Peace and to three reverend fathers in God, that is to say to my Lord William Smith, to my Lord William Attwater, to my Lord John Longland, late successively Bishops of Lincoln, secretary which Edward decessyd the X day of October, the yere of out Lord MVcXXX on whose Soule and on the Soule of Mistress Emme his wife-Jesu have mercy'
