MATERIALS: carved from Cornish granite and limestone.
DESCRIPTION: the memorial is situated beside the main entrance to the churchyard of the Church of St Andrew. It comprises a cross fleury set on a tapering shaft, plinth and two-stepped base. At the centre of the cross are the intertwined letters of the Christogram ‘IHS’. The memorial stands approximately 2.1m high and is carved from Cornish granite except for the lower step, which is of limestone. The north-west face of the plinth is inscribed in leaded lettering: IN MEMORY OF/ (FIVE NAMES)/ KILLED IN ACTION. DURING/ THE WAR 1914 – 1918. There is a further inscription on the south-west face of the plinth: 1939 – 1945/ (TWO NAMES).
History
The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. This was the result of both the huge impact on communities of the loss of three quarters of a million British lives, and also the official policy of not repatriating the dead: therefore the memorials provided the main focus of the grief felt at this great loss.
One such memorial was raised at Winston as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by the members of the local community who lost their lives in the First World War. It was unveiled during a memorial service on Sunday 24 June 1923 by Lieutenant-Colonel G W Hosfield. After the Second World War, the names of those parishioners who fell during that conflict were also added to the memorial.
