History

Memorial fountain some 18 feet high to Dr F W Lewis 1851-1899, erected in 1900-01. Lewis was noted as a doctor in the town, the son of Frederick Lewis of Llwyncelyn, Llanwrda and brother of the rugby international C P Lewis (1853-1923). Old photographs show the fountain with cast-iron Gothic railings and 4 cast iron lamps. The memorial cost £600 and was erected by Edgar Groom of Henllys, Llandovery.

Exterior

Tall polished granite memorial fountain of red Aberdeen granite, set in a square, cobbled enclosure. Large scale shallow circular bowl on round pedestal with moulded plinth. Bowl is gadrooned and has centrepiece of very large turned baluster pedestal carrying a second similar circular shallow basin, itself with centrepiece turned baluster with cross finial. Fountain is raised on 2 unpolished granite steps of octagonal shape and is inscribed on 4 sides. On W is inscribed ' Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren ye have done it unto me'. S is inscribed ' The beloved physician', N has 'Blessed are the merciful' and E ' In loving memory of Doctor Frederick Williams Lewis MRCS LSA Lon. Born May 8 1851 Died Nov 25 1899. This fountain is erected by his friends the Rev Thomas Evans JP and Mrs Evans of Henllys 1901'.

Reasons for Listing

Included as a very large late Victorian fountain of townscape value in the principal square of the town, and for its interest to local history.
