Terrace retaining wall adjoining Pitchford Hall to east

Terrace retaining wall. 1870's and 1880's, probably by George Devey
and possibly incorporating parts of an earlier wall. Coursed red sandstone
rubble with ashlar dressings and stone coping. Irregularly curved wall,
returning to adjoin Pitchford Hall (qv ) at the north end; approximately
60 metres long and of varying heights. A short straight section at the
south end of the wall has square ashlar end piers with globe finials and
provides a visual stop to the flights of steps (qv) which descend
from the lawn to the south of the house. There is a small culvert arch
at the south end too. The wall retains the west bank of the Row Brook
as it passes close to the east of Pitchford Hall (qv) and helps to create
a very picturesque setting. It is also probably a partial rebuilding
of a wall in a similar location shown on an estate map of 1714, kept in
the house. Included for group value.
