Description

CHERITON FITZPAINE BRINDIWELL HILL
SS 80 NE
7/14 Brindiwell Farmhouse
-
- II

Farmhouse. Early-mid C17, renovated after fire circa 1940. Plastered cob on rubble
footings; rubble stacks topped with C20 brick; slate roof (originally thatch). 3-
room-and-cross-passage plan house facing south-west with service room at left (north-
west) end. Gable end stacks to service and inner rooms and axial stack at upper end
of hall. 2 storeys. Asymetrical but vaguely regular 6-window front of circa 1940
casements with glazing bars, one with leaded glass. Passage door with C20- gabled
porch left of centre and secondary door at right end to inner room sheltered by an
outbuilding. Despite C20 fire damage which had necessitated complete replacement of
the roof, the ground floor is still largely original. Both sides of passage are
lined with oak plank-and-muntin screens, chamfered with scroll stops. Lower screen
includes a segmental-headed doorframe. Service room crossbeam is chamfered with
runout stops. Hall has double ovolo-moulded crossbeam with facetted step stops and
inner room (now kitchen) has chamfered crossbeam with scroll stops. All fireplaces
are blocked.
