Large house, now school. Much of c1820 though possibly incorporating earlier
fragments; the kitchen wing to rear looks like a C18 cottage. Coursed rubble,
though main front is faced with ashlar and of 3 storeys, and 10 bays. Shallow
outer gables with high parapets. The left hand gable projects slightly and projecting
in turn from it is a 2-storey squared bay window, ornamented with Soanic pilasters,
lightly moulded with incised rectangles, and containing four windows to each
floor. All windows have moulded architraves and are tall, with minimal glazing
bars. Central part of four bays. The doorway has round arched fanlight beneath
a broken pediment and a slightly moulded architrave. The right hand gable is
flush with the facade, and 2 bays wide. Two string courses and a modillion eaves
cornice, which is interrupted by the gables. Rear is of rubble, squared and
randomly coursed, with stone tiled roof with a long wing parallel to the street
at right angles to the main range. Irregular composition might suggest various
building dates. Certainly the low kitchen wing, of 1½ storeys with gabled dormers
and stone stacks seems earlier.
