Small country house, now four houses. 1629, late C18 and c1870 with
C20 alterations, Sandstone ashlar, and painted render,with C20
concrete tile roofs and six white brick chimney stacks. Main south-
west block has very steeply pitched tall roof, first floor band, sill
bands and moulded eaves band. 2 storey. All windows are plain
sashes or similar casements. South front has a single window and a
pair of windows to the left, with above 2 windows. At either corner
a circular tower with 3 windows to each floor topped by octagonal
copper spires. The west front has an off-centre 2 storey square bay
window with hipped roof and 2 windows to each floor, to the right a
single window to each floor. To the left a slightly projecting 2
storey section topped by a pediment with a central blocked doorway now
containing a heraldic datestone inscribed 1629, to the left a glazed
doorway and to the right a tripartite window. Above 2 windows and to
the right a tripartite window. The north-west corner has a 2 storey
canted bay window topped by a lower octagonal copper spire, with 3
windows to each floor. The east entrance front has to the left a
projecting single storey porch with moulded door surround and six
panel door with side lights and overlight. To the right a single
window and a pair of windows. Above 2 windows with to the right a C20
window and beyond a large stair window. The north east range, now
painted has on the south front a 2 storey canted bay window with 3
windows on each floor, with to the left a C20 glazed doorway and above
a single window. To the right 2 windows on each floor then a small
canted bay window topped with an octagonal spire with a single window
on the ground floor and 3 above. The east front has a canted bay
window with 3 windows on each floor and to the left a C20 entrance and
ground floor addition above 3 windows. Beyond to right a lower wing
with lean-to verandah, and a doorway to the left and 4 windows to the
right. Above 2 glazing bar sashes. Interior. Former study has
elaborate plaster frieze and ceiling, wooden fire surround and some
panelling. Former dining room has wooden fire surround plaster coving
and buffer arch. Former sitting room has elaborate fire surround, and
decorated plaster coving and ceiling. Former entrance hall has
original doors and wooden fire surround with wooden staircase with re-
used eighteenth century balustrade and fine stain glass window. Most
rooms retain nineteenth century doors and shutters. This house was
originally built for the Duke of Leeds.
