Tomb of Lucy Gallup

GV II

Pedestal monument with figure. c1883, designer unknown. Grey
and pink granite with marble figure. Square, stepped plinth,
with inset circular photograph of the deceased and prominently
inscribed name, supporting a pink granite column with grey
Egyptian columns set at the angles; surmounted by a sculptured
marble portrait figure of the deceased in classical robes,
right hand pointing heavenwards, left hand holding a chaplet.
A very early English example of the practice of including
photographs of the deceased and unusual being combined with a
portrait figure. The family was of American origin and were
connected with the founder of the Gallup public opinion poll.
