Mausoleum, 1761-5 by Robert Adam for 1st Earl of Shelburne (1705-
61). Ashlar with leaded dome, square plan with pedimented
projections each side, one an open portico, the others transepts
for monuments. Portico has Roman Doric paired columns and full
entablature, carried right around building. Armorial carving in
pediment. Pilaster responds and similar angle piers to transepts,
which have blank arch with moulded imposts. Angles of main block
have plain niches and blank panels over. Blank attic with
modillion cornice. Arched main doorway. Rear is raised over high
vermiculated basement with arched entry to vault. Outstanding
interior with plastered dome and tunnel vaulted transepts, the
transept arches enclosed by 2-column Tuscan screens in antis
carrying entablature which is continuous around chamber and
repeated within principal recess. Niches in angles and paterae in
upper spandrels. Flat ceilng spandrels have anthemion plasterwork.
Principal recess has urns on entablature and fine white marble
sarcophagus by A. Carlini c1775.
