Late Cl8. Built as a mansion and originally the finest in Whitby, converted
to an hotel and much altered in 1870. 3 storeys and basement in ashlar. Flowergate
elevation has centre 3 windows under open pediment with slight projection. Central
window recessed back again and with a 3-light semi-circular window on the second
floor closing top of recess. Basement and ground floor now built out as shops
and lounge. Lounge interior has 4 sash windows with eaved architraves, triple
keystones and square block rustications, and opening into hall flanked by Ionic
pilasters. Band, quoins, eaved architraves and cornices to first floor windows;
pediments to outer windows and pediments to centre on consoles. Balustraded apron
to all except the centre window. Top floor with open pediment and round window,
dentilled cornice, solid parapet replacing balustrade. Tall C19 mansard roof
of Welsh slates. Skinner Street elevation: Rendered. 3 storeys and attics.
4 dormers. 2 2-storey oriels of 3 lights flank 3 windows, one blocked, segmental
arches, except for the top floor, band continues cills. Central entrance door
is later. Interior decoration, which included panels by the school of Pannini,
now largely removed. NMR.
