Description

THORPE BY WATER
SP 89 NE
4/150
10.11.55 Gate-piers and
garden walls to
front of Manor
House (formerly
listed under Manor
House with barn
and gate-piers).
GV II

Pair of gate-piers with flanking garden walls. Piers are c.1691, of rusticated
limestone ashlar. Square in plan with side pilasters, moulded bases, cornices
and ball finials. Rustication matches quoins of 1691 wing of house. Piers are
said to have been re-sited C20 from former nearby position. Walls may be later
in date, but wall to right incorporates some masonry of demolished C16-C17 front
wing of house. Coursed limestone rubble with flat stone coping, ramped up to
piers. Short return at right end retains moulded stone jambs of former
fireplace.
