South Cowpen Cottage

Cottage, probably C16, altered. Squared Wealden sandstone rubble with tiled roof. Two-room plan with continuous later outshut and single storey addition under construction at left. Two storeys and three bays to front. Solid door and diamond-pane leaded casement windows all date from a restoration of c 1900. The ground floor windows have basket arched heads, the spandrels carved with "C" and "M" (for Catherine, niece of William Morris). Sitting room has bressumer of fireplace and joists all chamfered with shield stops. The roof is underdrawn with carved bosses of c 1900.
