Retort house. c1840. For Bristol and Clifton Oil Gas Company.
Squared coursed Pennant rubble with rock-faced dressings.
Rectangular open plan. 2 storeys; 9-window range. Roofless and
windowless, gabled ends, with plinth, first-floor sill band,
moulded kneelers and coping. Semicircular-arched openings,
large doorways in the middle of each side, smaller doorways in
the 3-window gables, and large round windows in the gables.
INTERIOR: derelict at time of survey. The Bristol and Clifton
Oil Gas Co was established on the site in 1823, and the
extension to the W built in 1840. The retort houses (qv) and
engine house (qv) form an evocative group with the walls to
Gasferry Road (qv).
