House. Late medieval. Timber-framed and rendered and part red
brick with gabled plain tile roofs. 2 storeys and complex
plan. NW corner comprises cross-wing and former hall. W face
of cross-wing is hipped with gabled roof and tall
wall-flanking stack. Hall part has lean-to, peg-tiled roof and
large dormer with 2 separate 3-light oak casements. Ground
floor has 2 similar windows. C17 end stack with crow-stepped
profile and flanking brick extensions, one with hipped roof.
Rear of hall has a number of old leaded casements. Cross-wing
was extended to E in C17 to form additional baffle-entry,
2-storey house with central ridge stack with canted strip
decoration. To the S of this, is a 2-storey early C20
extension in render with half hipped plain tile roof and 2
flat roofed dormers on E flank. According to the RCHM there
are good late C16 wall paintings including inscriptions, part
of which are now in Saffron Walden Museum.
